At Home with Justin Hutchinson
Now that we have a little more space between us and a lot more time on our hands, we figured it’s the perfect moment for everyone to get to know each other a little better.
This week we’re at home with… Justin Hutchinson
Independent designer, and the designer behind the iconic Tait Collection – Jak & Jil – as well as being a close friend of the Taits.
In 25 words or less, describe your relationship with Tait
Having started my design career on the Tait factory floor, they taught me a huge amount about running a family business.
Where are you locked down / holed up? Who with?
Me and my family Jessie, Layla, Hugo, Fred and our new addition Beatrix the dog, have managed to escape to our beautiful family beach house down at Cape Paterson, Victoria.
How are you still creating while isolating?
Rolling out the trace on the dining table and drawing for a few hours every day, working through the launch of the Urban Commons new website, as well as managing the build of our family home back in Brunswick.
Are you leaning into cabin fever or ditching it for A Life Outside?
Cape Paterson allows for plenty of long beach walks, rock pool exploration and observing the sea’s ever-changing nature. The environment presents so many amazing colour combinations in the rocks and sea life.
What are you surprised that you don’t miss at all and why?
The constant rush to get things done, taking each day at a time and living in the moment.
What’s the best part of your day?
Probably the morning coffee, the glass of wine at the end of the day is a close contender.
What have you learnt from lockdown?
How amazingly resilient children can be, they are always in the moment and forever at play!
