Introducing the Rockpool Collection

Inspired by the undulating forms of rockpools, this upholstered collection embraces smaller footprint living. Its compact dimensions, welcoming curves, and textural details have emerged in creative collaboration between Tait and Adam Goodrum. Like its namesake, Rockpool can adapt, renew and regenerate over time – purpose designed for refurbishing, and for the great outdoors. Suited to courtyards, backyards, verandahs, balconies and rooftops – it also slides effortlessly into interior and commercial spaces.

Organic forms

Soft-launched at Melbourne Design Week, Rockpool brings together elegance and durability. Organic flowing shapes are visually soft and nestle into their environment – yet are crafted to withstand challenging outdoor conditions. ‘There is a softness to the forms of naturally weathered rock pools,’ says industrial designer Adam Goodrum. ‘The way water carves smooth, undulating shapes into stone feels welcoming and timeless.’

Adam started by sketching freeform shapes that echoed the fluidity of natural rock formations. ‘Early on, I knew I wanted a visual lightness—something that felt sculptural but also inviting,’ he shares. The concept then evolved into a series of interconnected curves, with an emphasis on negative space to create a sense of airiness. It became a balance between playfulness and refinement, both contemporary and timeless.

The Rockpool Collection comprises an Armchair, 2-Seater Curved Sofa, 2-Seater Straight Sofa, 3-Seater Curved Sofa and 3-Seater Straight Sofa – all available in 2 heights.

Good things, small packages

The collection was conceived to meet the growing need for particular environments. ‘The brief was to create a smaller-footprint product than Trace,’ shares Founding Director Gordon Tait. With the growth of more compact, medium and high-density living, the team set out to design something that could be used on smaller balconies, courtyards and verandahs, as well as cosy interior nooks.

The resulting collection celebrates and contributes to the small-footprint movement. The 3-Seater Sofa is almost 25% smaller than the Trace Sofa, a comparable upholstered collection. And the compact Rockpool Armchair is roughly 35% smaller than it’s Trace Armchair counterpart.

Woven in Italy using solution-dyed yarns, Pahi is a luxurious, dimensional upholstery suitable for outdoor applications, resistant to UV, salt and chlorinated water, mildew, and bacteria.

Design Features & Innovation

Drawing on our metal crafting expertise, Rockpool’s frame is developed on the tube bending machine, with skilful welds completing the form. Achieving the curvature, along with the discreet and secure back panel attachment, was a complex process requiring significant R&D. Adam describes further design considerations: ‘The seat depths and angles were carefully tested to allow for a relaxed yet upright posture, making the pieces suitable for both lounging and social settings. The way the back cushion integrates into the frame not only enhances the aesthetic but also improves lumbar support.’

Mokum’s new ‘Pahi’, a plain-woven fabric in an earthy colour palette, was chosen to complement the curved form. Its slightly uneven weave with subtle highlights ‘Gives the fabric a jewel like richness and depth, perfect for the ‘Rockpool’ forms,’ Susan shares. ‘The extensive colour range of Pahi has allowed us to present two-tone upholstery design with a beautiful stitched seam detail adding a subtle layering effect.’

Like all Tait collections, Rockpool is designed for easy refurbishment. Upholstery covers can be removed, and the frame can be easily re-powdercoated as there are no encumbrances or need to remove any rivets or screws prior.

Rockpool is available now.
