Jackalope Hotel

Setting outdoor benchmarks for a genre-defining hotel

A swag of national and international awards is testament to Carr’s out-of-the-box approach to Jackalope. This contemporary icon breaks with tradition, redefines the hotel design rulebook and infuses a subtle Australian flavour in its execution.

ICONIC AUSTRALIAN

The Mornington Peninsula, with its gently sloping hills and landscape of vines, is a fitting backdrop for this remarkable hotel. Jackalope is as intriguing as its namesake – a mythical creature from American folklore that combines a jackrabbit with antelope horns.

The site has a distinctly Australian flavour, surrounded by century-old native trees and a matrix of Indigenous mass planting. And so does the hotel – its imposing form paying homage to agricultural barns dotted around rural parts of the country. A dramatic saw-cut roof, jet black cladding and charred timber detailing anchor the Modernist monolith in the rugged landscape.

AN ODE TO FORM

To accompany the striking structure, Carr paid close attention to not just the architectural and interior design finishes, but also the furniture.

‘The Linear Sunlounge and Breeze Sofa from Tait were chosen to complement the Jackalope’s imposing black pyramid structures,’ shares Founding Principal Sue Carr.  ‘The products are honest and dramatic in their form and colour – yet refined enough to allow the spectacular natural landscape to remain the focus.’ Sue identifies a dialogue between Tait’s ‘Strong rationale for crafting contemporary and timeless pieces, [which] aligns with Carr’s considered and enduring design philosophy of materiality and form.’

LOCAL = MORE SUSTAINABLE

Populating the sitting and pool areas, Tait products were selected for their comfort, weather-resistance and suitability for the outdoor environment. These practical concerns extend to procurement policy and minimising carbon emissions. ‘At Carr, we frequently work with Australian products to support local companies and manufacturers,’ says Sue. ‘The minimisation of transit and duty costs is also beneficial,’ she adds.

Designed as a contemporary icon, Jackalope has set the benchmark for the future of hotel experiences in the region. And foregoing trends by setting an aesthetic of its own, it is designed with longevity in mind. ‘Sustainable design strategies and selections were considered at the earliest opportunity in the Jackalope’s lifespan. All our design choices were anchored around an enduring outcome, both aesthetically and functionally’ shares Sue. ‘The Linear Sunlounge and Breeze Sofa are highly durable in the harsh Australian climate and made to last.’
