The Making Of Saltbush by Tait x Country Road

You’ve seen the beautiful Lounger, Occasional Table and Side Table that make up the Saltbush range. This limited-edition collaboration with Country Road that celebrates heritage, quality and craftsmanship was almost a year in the making.

Now, we invite you behind the scenes, right into our factory, to see the processes that brought each to life.

From initial sketches to finishing touches, this was a collaborative affair. Early creative brainstorms explored the synergies between the two brands and our communities, as well as practical parameters. We discussed how many pieces we wanted to produce, and what they should be. A poolside setting was the perfect nexus between our outdoor furniture crafting expertise and Country Road’s masterful approach to relaxed living.

Like all our products, once we had taken the designs through conceptualisation and design development, we got to work on the making. Metal components were sourced and placed into a jig, which we custom built in-house. These Frankenstein-like contraptions may not look pretty – but are what enable the beautifully sculpted pieces to emerge. Fixed into place, the metal components were welded together, taking their final shape.

For this poolside collection, we used stainless steel for its ability to withstand pool chemicals, as well as the weather. The curved slats which form the seat and backrest are fixed to the frame, made in one piece on our freeform tube-bender. Whilst intended to be used with the upholstered cushion, the curvaceous form is sculptural in its own right. If and when the cushions are removed and stored, the Lounger still holds its own as a poolside statement.

An elegant seat and back cushion is sculpted from reticulated outdoor grade foam for maximum comfort and fast drying. Aligning with Country Road’s casual luxe aesthetic, it is then upholstered by our craftspeople in a high-performance boucle that’s made from 100% recycled fibre and suitable for the outdoors.

Stainless steel is also used for the range’s Side Table and Occasional Table. Again, tubular steel, triple-coated for optimal corrosion resistance, forms the structure and base. A porcelain top to the Occasional Table complements the frame’s curved silhouette and Country Road’s distinctly elegant spirit.

Handles were designed into both Saltbush tables to enable the kind of easy transportation of a relaxed poolside lifestyle. Designed to be as easygoing and useful as its plant namesake, the tables also nest for space-saving potential. The Side Table (49cm diameter x 50cm height) conveniently tucks into the Occasional Table (29cm diameter x 58cm height). This timely nod to smaller footprint living makes Saltbush as suitable indoors as it is poolside.
