Tait Factory Tours

Designers and architects, if you’ve ever wanted to take a closer look at our manufacturing processes, we’ve got great news. We’ve reinstated factory tours for industry visitors – and you’re invited.

Our manufacturing heart

With manufacturing in our DNA, our factory is the heart of everything we do. Our taskforce of machinery has grown alongside our business over the last 30+ years and has helped shape our offering and maintain an exceptional standard. Housing all our processes under the one roof is a big part of how we do it.

As a hardworking productive hub, the factory is quite different from our showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. But the factory is integral to who we are and what we do. In many ways, we’re as fond of our machines as we are the finished products!

That’s why we’re opening our doors for industry tours to our Thomastown factory in 2025. We want to share the very core of our passion and purpose with the people who are as fascinated by process as we are: designers and architects.

How does it work?

Groups of up to 20 people can book in for an enlightening 1.5 hour guided tour. Following an introduction, you’ll move through different ‘stations’ and see some of our machines and craftspeople in action.

Depending on the day, you might see our tube bender whipping twisting up a frame for a Swing or Billy Chair. You’ll step into our yard, where we sandblast surfaces to maximise adhesion quality and longevity of powder coating. You may be invited into one of our 7 welding bays, where specialist welders like Amin work their magic.

What's it like?

Members of Foolscap Studio’s Melbourne, Sydney and Perth teams recently dropped in for a visit. ‘We were amazed by the technology, equipment, process and materials,’ says Foolscap’s Founder and Principal, Adèle Winteridge. Favourite stops on the tour included, ‘The tube-bending machine from Japan, the robot welding machine, the box-maker, beautiful hand binding on the Volley Chair, in-house upholstery and powder coating in action’.

Embedded in the manufacturing processes, our passion and capabilities in Sustainability and Customisation are also more visible in the factory.

‘We love going to the source to understand how each item is made, and the design and manufacture processes behind the scenes,’ Adele shares. When seen in action, ‘The approach to sustainability across every process really landed’.

In addition, in-house manufacturing enables a rare level of creative agility, as Adele noticed – ‘There were elements of customisation, bespoke and the handmade which were fantastic to see.’

Our investment into innovation and technology helps us achieve excellent precision and efficiency. But the most important investment we make is actually in people. Every single one of our products is hand-finished and quality checked by skilled, thorough and passionate craftspeople. And every Tait piece is a team effort.

We look forward to showing you around sometime soon.
