A favoured form, extended
Each new piece in the Swing Collection takes its lead from the chair’s signature bent-tube geometry, translating the original design into a Lounger, Barstool, Chaise, Dining Table, Cafe Table and Side Table. ‘Each piece explores how this single line can bend and loop to support different functions, while maintaining a sense of visual lightness and rhythm,’ says Adam. ‘The result is a family of furniture that feels cohesive, with a fluid geometry that carries through the entire collection.’ As always, the designs evolved during the R&D and testing phases. ‘The challenge was to translate the continuous tubular structure into different typologies, without losing the elegance and playfulness that define the chair,’ Adam continues. Close collaboration with the Tait Design Studio and manufacturing team combined digital modelling with physical prototyping. Early testing focused on refining the geometry of the bends and proportions of the frame to achieve both comfort and structural stability. Small adjustments to radii, angles and proportions helped resolve the balance between sculptural expression and manufacturing efficiency. There were iterative benefits of expanding an existing product, according to Founding Director and metal craftsmen Gordon Tait, that helped enhance the collection. ‘The learnings from the Swing Chair were transformed to the new products,’ he says. ‘Wire formation, tube forming, programming, and jig design were all revisited and refined’.
