Introducing the Swing Collection

The beloved Swing Chair – a Tait icon defined by its graceful arcs and pure stainless steel construction – grows into a full collection. Expanding on the original’s distinctive aesthetic and enduring craftsmanship, the Australian-made Swing Collection brings hardworking glamour to new seating forms and tables.

Early sketches for the expanded Swing Collection, based on the design language of the Swing Chair, released in 2023.

Revisiting an icon

Some designs inspire a second look — and then a permanent place. Since its introduction in 2023, the Swing Chair has held a distinctive position in our range, and in our hearts. ‘It has been received so well into the market, fast becoming one of our best sellers despite being the most expensive chair in our collection,’ says Susan Tait, Creative Director. ‘People just love it, for many at first sight. You can hear them sigh when they spot it on the floor.’ With repeated client requests for other iterations, particularly a Lounger, we decided to explore what a full Swing Collection could be. Our longtime collaborator and friend, the talented Adam Goodrum, was equally excited to broaden his original concept. ‘The Collection evolved from the core idea of the Swing Chair, a continuous stainless-steel tube that flows around the object in one uninterrupted line. That gesture became the defining language of the collection,’ he explains.

A favoured form, extended

Each new piece in the Swing Collection takes its lead from the chair’s signature bent-tube geometry, translating the original design into a LoungerBarstool, Chaise, Dining TableCafe Table and Side Table. ‘Each piece explores how this single line can bend and loop to support different functions, while maintaining a sense of visual lightness and rhythm,’ says Adam. ‘The result is a family of furniture that feels cohesive, with a fluid geometry that carries through the entire collection.’ As always, the designs evolved during the R&D and testing phases. ‘The challenge was to translate the continuous tubular structure into different typologies, without losing the elegance and playfulness that define the chair,’ Adam continues. Close collaboration with the Tait Design Studio and manufacturing team combined digital modelling with physical prototyping. Early testing focused on refining the geometry of the bends and proportions of the frame to achieve both comfort and structural stability. Small adjustments to radii, angles and proportions helped resolve the balance between sculptural expression and manufacturing efficiency. There were iterative benefits of expanding an existing product, according to Founding Director and metal craftsmen Gordon Tait, that helped enhance the collection. ‘The learnings from the Swing Chair were transformed to the new products,’ he says. ‘Wire formation, tube forming, programming, and jig design were all revisited and refined’.

Purpose-designed for A Life Outside

Like the original Swing Chair, the Swing Collection is designed for the outdoors. Whether powder coated or not, the stainless steel form withstands UV exposure, salty and humid coastal conditions, and the ordinary wear of a well-used outdoor space. The collection suits a wide range of settings – residential terraces and pool decks, hospitality forecourts, public courtyards and commercial rooftops – anywhere a sense of considered simplicity is called for. ‘Its visual lightness allows it to complement architecture and landscape without dominating the space,’ Adam explains, ‘while the stainless steel construction makes it highly durable for exterior use.’ Susan agrees, adding, ‘I can also imagine people using it indoors, then carrying it outside to use during summer. It has already been seen in some stunning hospitality projects, so I can’t wait to see how people use the expanded collection.’ And because every piece is made in Australia to exacting standards of quality, the Swing Collection is built not just for the season ahead, but for all the years that follow.

Made to last, designed for renewal

Longevity is designed into the Swing Collection from the beginning. Stainless steel was chosen with purpose: naturally corrosion-resistant, it performs exceptionally well in demanding outdoor environments, ‘making this a friend for life,’ suggests Susan. The result is a collection that holds its integrity whether it’s positioned poolside, on an oceanfront terrace, or in a suburban backyard. The powder coat finish is UV-resistant, adding extra protection against the harsh Australian sun, and the electropolished version ‘is the ultimate luxe finish and performer outdoors,’ Susan adds. ‘It provides the look of chrome without any of the nasties’. An additional ‘Passiv Matte’ finish increases the material’s durability whilst retaining a subtle low-lustre stainless steel look. This embedded durability is extended with sustainable circular design principles through its capacity for refurbishment. Powder coated pieces can be stripped and recoated — refreshing the finish or switching to a new colour entirely according to need or desire. Electropolished and passivated processes can also be redone to restore the original surface. In all cases, the underlying structure remains: no waste, no replacement, just renewal. Saving hassle and money, refurbishing furniture also saves waste – ensuring Swing becomes legacy, not landfill, retaining its material value for years to come.

The Swing Collection is available across Australia from 2 June.
